Legion

Legion Peak Caffeine + L-Theanine - Balanced 1:1 Nootropic for Clean, Steady Energy (60 Capsules)

The same settled stack as our theanine-forward pick, but built 1:1. More lift up front, still no jitters riding along with it.

  • A true 1:1 ratio. 100 mg PurCaf® organic caffeine against 100 mg Suntheanine® L-theanine, equal parts, which sits closer to the stimulant-forward end of the studied range than the 2:1 blend we also carry.
  • Branded, third-party-documented actives. PurCaf is organic caffeine sourced from green coffee beans rather than a synthetic bulk powder, and Suntheanine is the most clinically referenced form of L-theanine on the market.
  • Nothing hiding behind a blend name. Both actives are listed at an exact milligram amount on the panel, so the dose is something you can actually check against the research instead of taking on faith.
  • Simple, plant-based capsule. Rice flour, bamboo extract, and rice hulls make up the capsule shell and flow agents, no artificial dyes, no unnecessary filler.
  • Third-party lab tested. Verified for purity and potency in an ISO 17025 accredited lab, which is a meaningfully higher bar than "tested" without naming a standard.
  • The punchier option in our lineup. If our 2:1 theanine-forward softgel feels too mellow for you, this is the one we point people to instead.

We already sell a 2:1, theanine-heavy caffeine and theanine softgel, and for a while we didn’t think we needed a second one. Then enough customers asked for something with more of an actual kick that we went looking, and this is the one we settled on. Same two active ingredients, same well-worn mechanism, just built to sit closer to the middle of the studied range instead of leaning calm.

One honest note before anything else. You’ll see this product marketed elsewhere with “200 mg” in the name. That’s 100 mg of caffeine plus 100 mg of theanine added together, not 200 mg of either ingredient on its own. We’d rather say that plainly than let the bigger number do work it hasn’t earned. The actual doses, 100 and 100, are both squarely inside the ranges used in the human trials on this pairing, which is the part that actually matters.

What we like about it personally is the ratio itself. A 1:1 split gives you noticeably more of a lift than our 2:1 pick, while the theanine is still there in a real, dosed amount to take the harder edges off. It won’t feel identical to a straight coffee, and it isn’t trying to. If you’ve read our other theanine and caffeine page and it sounded a little too gentle for a demanding morning, this is the version we’d actually suggest instead.

What is in the capsule, and why

Two active ingredients, both dosed to match the clinical literature rather than a rounding-error amount, plus a plant-based capsule shell. No third botanical thrown in to pad the label.

How the two work together

  • Caffeine (100 mg, as PurCaf® organic caffeine) works by blocking adenosine, the molecule that quietly builds up across your day and tells your brain it's time to slow down. Block it and alertness goes up. Taken alone at this kind of dose, some people also pick up the usual downside: a faster heartbeat, some jitter, a harder crash on the way down.
  • L-theanine (100 mg, as Suntheanine®) is an amino acid from tea that does cross the blood-brain barrier, a question we get often enough that it's worth answering directly. It's associated with more alpha brain-wave activity, the same relaxed-alert state people describe after meditation, along with gentle support for GABA and dopamine signaling.
  • Together, the theanine takes the sharpest edges off the caffeine without flattening the alertness. At a 1:1 ratio the caffeine still leads, so expect more of a genuine lift than a purely calm-focus product, just without the full jitter that the same 100 mg would bring on its own.

Why 1:1 instead of 2:1

The human research on this stack spans roughly 100 to 200 mg of each ingredient, and where a product lands in that range changes how it feels.

  • 1:1 (equal parts) keeps the stimulant more up front. This is the profile people reach for when they want the smoothing effect of theanine but still want to feel the coffee.
  • 2:1 theanine-to-caffeine (our other product) is calmer and more settle-in-and-work, the better fit if straight caffeine already feels like too much for you.

This is the 1:1 version. If you're not sure which ratio suits you, the honest answer is that it's worth trying both, since caffeine response varies a fair amount person to person and partly comes down to genetics.

What the evidence does and does not say

The caffeine and theanine pairing is one of the more consistently studied combinations in the nootropic space, with multiple randomized trials pointing to better attention and task accuracy than caffeine alone, and less of the jittery downside. That's a solid evidence base as these things go.

The honest limit still applies here. This can help support a sharper, steadier stretch of a normal day. It is not a substitute for sleep, and it will not turn a genuinely rough day into a good one. Individual response varies, and the first bottle is worth treating as a personal experiment rather than a guarantee.

Who it tends to suit

  • People who already drink coffee and want the same lift with less of the crash and jitter.
  • Anyone who found our 2:1 softgel too mild and wanted more stimulant presence.
  • Students, developers, and anyone doing demanding focused work earlier in the day.

Who it is probably not for

  • Anyone avoiding stimulants altogether. This is still a caffeine product, just a smoother one.
  • Anyone needing something for later in the day, since the timing math below still applies.
  • Anyone advised by a doctor to limit caffeine intake.
How To Use

Start with one capsule and see how you respond. Everyone's caffeine tolerance is different, and starting low is the sensible way to find yours before making it a daily habit. One capsule is the studied serving, 100 mg caffeine plus 100 mg theanine.

Timing matters more than people expect. Caffeine's half-life is roughly 5 to 6 hours, so half of that 100 mg dose is still active in your system well into the afternoon. Take it in the morning or early afternoon, ideally with food, and treat mid-afternoon as a firm cutoff if sleep matters to you. No amount of theanine offsets a poor night's sleep.

How to dose it

  • One capsule is a full studied serving for most people.
  • On a demanding day some take a second dose earlier on, but count your total caffeine intake for the day, including any coffee, and keep the timing rule above.

How to stack it

  • Want it calmer? Our 2:1 theanine-forward softgel is the better fit; this product is built to be the more stimulant-leaning of the two.
  • Want more lift on top of this? A coffee alongside it works, though at that point you're adding caffeine on caffeine, so mind your total.
  • Building a broader stack? It sits fine next to a choline, magnesium, or omega-3 basic with no overlap.

Cycle it if you use it daily. Caffeine tolerance is real and it creeps up quietly. A caffeine-free day here and there, or a short break every few weeks, keeps the effect from fading. We'd rather tell you that upfront than sell you a bigger bottle.

What to avoid

  • Stacking with other caffeine sources, pre-workout, energy drinks, extra coffee, without adding up your total daily intake.
  • Taking it late enough in the day that it interferes with sleep.
Third Party Lab Testing
  • Third-party tested for purity and potency in an ISO 17025 accredited lab, which is independent verification rather than an in-house claim.
  • Branded, standardized actives (PurCaf® organic caffeine, Suntheanine® L-theanine), traceable forms with their own supporting documentation rather than unnamed bulk powder.
  • No artificial fillers, dyes, or unnecessary junk in the capsule itself.

As with any supplement, the strongest form of proof is a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis tied to the lot number on your bottle. If that matters to you, note the lot number and request the COA directly. A brand that can't produce one for a specific batch is telling you something.

  • Suntheanine® is a patented, fermentation-derived form of L-theanine, the most commonly used standardized form in the human trials behind this pairing.
