Omega-3
Omega-3 is the foundation that gets skipped constantly in favor of more exciting-sounding ingredients, which is a mistake. DHA makes up roughly 40% of the fatty acid content in your brain's gray matter, a structural building block your body needs from diet or supplements, not something a stimulant or an amino acid can substitute for. EPA carries its own separate case, the most-studied omega-3 for cardiovascular support and, increasingly, for "mood-related" outcomes through its anti-inflammatory activity. The three products in this collection cover both sides of that story, in different doses, ratios, and formats.
The main thing that separates them is the EPA to DHA ratio and the form the fish oil takes in your body. Two of these products are EPA-forward, leaning on cardiovascular and mood-related support with real but secondary brain benefits.
The third is a true 1:1 split, giving you a considerably larger DHA dose alongside a full EPA dose rather than one at the expense of the other.
All Omega-3 brands we carry are the triglyceride form, which we heavily prioritize over the cheaper ethyl ester form most budget fish oil uses. Triglyceride absorbs meaningfully better in controlled comparisons. None of these are vegetarian or vegan, since all three use real fish oil, and none are meant to be an acute focus aid.
Treat omega-3 as ongoing structural support that builds over months, not something you feel the day you take it.

What's the actual difference between EPA and DHA?
EPA is the fatty acid most tied to cardiovascular support and, increasingly, mood-related outcomes, largely through its anti-inflammatory activity. DHA is the structural fatty acid, a major component of the brain's gray matter phospholipids, and the one most directly tied to the brain-health side of an omega-3's story. Most fish oil formulas lean one direction or the other rather than balancing both equally.
Which ratio should I choose, EPA-forward or 1:1?
If you want the cardiovascular and mood-related case for omega-3 alongside genuine but secondary brain support, the two EPA-forward options (Viva Naturals or the Sports Research Minis) are a reasonable everyday foundation. If you specifically want a heavier DHA dose without switching to a different product's ratio entirely, or you're working with a practitioner toward a specific target, the Designs for Health liquid's true 1:1 split gets you there alongside a full EPA dose rather than a reduced one.
Why does the triglyceride form matter so much?
Fish oil comes in different chemical forms that aren't interchangeable in the body. Cheaper ethyl ester (EE) fish oil is easier to concentrate to a high potency but absorbs roughly 73% as well as natural fish oil in controlled comparisons. The re-esterified triglyceride (TG) form used across all three products here converts back into the structure your gut is actually built to absorb, and in the same research it outperformed natural fish oil at around 124% relative bioavailability. Concentration without the right form is a half-measure.
Will fish oil actually make me sharper or more focused?
Don't expect that. The cardiovascular case for EPA and DHA is well established, but the cognitive case is more mixed across trials, with the clearest signal in people who started with a low baseline omega-3 status rather than those already getting enough. Treat any of these three as ongoing structural brain-lipid support, not an acute focus aid, and not a claim that it will make an already healthy brain sharper.
How long before I notice a difference?
Omega-3 status builds gradually regardless of which product or dose you choose. Your blood omega-3 index, the standard way researchers measure status, typically takes 3 to 4 months of consistent daily intake to fully reflect a change. A week or two of use isn't a fair test of what any of these are doing.
Are any of these vegetarian or vegan?
No. All three use real fish oil, and the softgel and liquid capsules themselves are made from fish or tilapia-derived gelatin. None of the three in this collection are suitable for vegetarians, vegans, or anyone with a fish or shellfish allergy.
Do I need to cycle omega-3, or take breaks from it?
No. Unlike caffeine or the adaptogens elsewhere on this site, omega-3 is meant to be a steady, ongoing daily foundation. There's no evidence that cycling it improves the outcome, and consistency is what actually moves your omega-3 status over time.
Is it safe to take a high dose of fish oil with blood thinners?
Talk to your doctor first if you're on blood-thinning medication or have a condition affecting blood clotting. Omega-3s have a mild antiplatelet effect at higher intakes, and this matters more with the Designs for Health liquid specifically, since its dose is considerably higher than either softgel option.
