Sports Research Triple Magnesium Complex - Glycinate, Malate & Taurinate for Any-Time Magnesium Support (120 Veggie Capsules)
The one magnesium in our lineup that isn't built around bedtime. Three chelated forms, no oxide, and the only one with a cardiovascular angle via taurine.
- 300 mg of magnesium from three chelated forms. Glycinate, malate, and taurinate combined via Chelamax®, with no magnesium oxide anywhere in the formula.
- Not built specifically around bedtime. Unlike our glycinate-only options, the malate component doesn't carry the same sedating reputation, which makes this a more any-time-of-day magnesium.
- Taurine as a carrier , bringing taurine's own cardiovascular and nervous-system research along with it, an angle none of our other magnesium products cover directly.
- Third-party tested, Certified Vegan, Non-GMO. - **The most affordable 300 mg option in our lineup by sticker price.** Real value depends on cost per milligram too; see the full comparison below.
- A simple rice-based capsule. Veggie capsule (hypromellose), rice flour, rice extract blend, no oxide filler.

This is the fifth magnesium we carry, and it fills a specific gap the other four don’t: something reasonable to take any time of day rather than a product implicitly built around winding down at night. Three chelated forms, glycinate, malate, and taurinate, are combined here instead of the single form or form-plus-oxide approach our other options use, and there’s no magnesium oxide in this one at all.
Worth being straightforward about what “triple chelated” actually buys you: it doesn’t mean three times the magnesium benefit, or that the magnesium itself absorbs better because it arrived attached to three different carriers instead of one. Once magnesium is in your bloodstream, it’s magnesium, regardless of which amino or organic acid carried it there.
The real case for this formula is what the carrier molecules themselves may contribute alongside the magnesium, glycine’s calming reputation, malate’s role in cellular energy production, and taurine’s cardiovascular research, not a multiplied magnesium effect. We think that’s a reasonable formulation logic. We don’t think it should be oversold as inherently superior magnesium delivery.
With this product, our magnesium shelf now covers four fairly distinct use cases: brain-targeted cognition (our two L-threonate options), high-dose sleep and relaxation (our glycinate complex), a flexible budget entry point (our pure glycinate tablets), and now an any-time-of-day, multi-pathway option. The full comparison is below in Learn More if you’re trying to figure out which one is actually right for you.

What makes this one different
Three things separate this from the rest of our magnesium lineup. First, it's built from three distinct chelated forms rather than a single form, or a form paired with inorganic magnesium oxide; nothing here is unchelated filler magnesium. Second, it isn't positioned around sleep the way our glycinate-only products are.
Malate in particular doesn't carry glycine's calming reputation, so this reads as a genuinely more all-purpose, any-time magnesium rather than an evening-specific one. Third, it includes taurine as a carrier, which is the only place in our magnesium lineup where taurine's own cardiovascular and nervous-system research comes along for the ride.
What is in the capsule, and why
- Magnesium glycinate, bound to the amino acid glycine, the same well-tolerated form used in our other glycinate products, generally associated with calm and muscle relaxation.
- Magnesium malate, bound to malic acid, a compound involved in the cellular energy production cycle. Some smaller studies have looked at magnesium malate specifically for muscle pain and fatigue, with mixed results; we'd call the evidence suggestive rather than settled. Its practical reputation is being less sedating than glycinate, which is the main reason it's a useful addition to a daytime-friendly formula.
- Magnesium taurinate, bound to taurine, an amino sulfonic acid with its own body of research in cardiovascular and nervous-system contexts, separate from magnesium's role. Taurine has some evidence for mild calming activity through its own receptor interactions, distinct from magnesium's mechanisms.
- All three are delivered via Chelamax®, a patented chelated magnesium technology. As with other branded ingredients we carry, this is licensed rather than a generic substitute, which comes with its own manufacturer documentation.
Evidence caveat, honestly
Glycinate has the deepest general track record of the three forms here. Malate and taurinate, as magnesium carriers specifically, have thinner independent research behind them, more traditional and preliminary than the settled body of evidence something like caffeine and theanine has. Combining three forms doesn't average that evidence up; it just means you're getting a blend built on one well-established form and two less-studied ones.

Which one is actually right for you
If cognition and memory are your specific goal, the two magnesium L-threonate options are the only ones actually targeting that mechanism; pick the DFH version if the original branded research behind Magtein matters to you, or the Sports Research version for essentially the same active ingredient at a lower price.
If sleep and relaxation are the goal, either glycinate option works. The DFH Glycinate Complex gives you the highest single dose and the best cost per milligram in the whole lineup. The Metagenics tablets let you dial your own dose down and cost less upfront.
If you want a magnesium that isn't specifically built around bedtime, something you could reasonably take in the morning without it working against you, with a bit of extra range from the malate and taurinate forms alongside glycinate, this Triple Complex is the one built for that. It's also the only one of the five with zero magnesium oxide in the formula.
Who it tends to suit
- Anyone who wants a magnesium they can take earlier in the day without the sleep-specific framing of a glycinate-only product.
- People interested in taurine's cardiovascular angle alongside their magnesium intake.
- Anyone who prefers an all-chelated formula with no magnesium oxide component at all.
Who it is probably not for
- Anyone specifically chasing the brain-targeted threonate mechanism; this product doesn't touch that pathway.
- Anyone who wants the single best-studied magnesium form available; our pure glycinate options have more research behind the specific form itself.
- Anyone with kidney disease without medical guidance, since magnesium clearance depends on healthy kidney function.
How To Use
Take 4 capsules daily. This is the largest per-day capsule count of any magnesium we carry, since the dose is spread across three chelate forms rather than concentrated in one or two. Take all 4 at once or split them across the day.
No specific time of day is required. Unlike our glycinate-only options, this one isn't built around an evening routine specifically. Morning, with a meal, or split AM and PM all work reasonably.
Mind your total magnesium intake if you're combining products. At 300 mg elemental magnesium, this alone sits close to the commonly cited 350 mg/day upper intake level for supplemental (non-food) magnesium. Don't stack a full serving of this alongside a full dose of another magnesium product without adding up the total first.
Give it real time. Magnesium status normalizing throughout the body generally takes a few weeks of consistent daily use, regardless of which chelated form you're taking.
How to stack it
- Fits cleanly alongside our caffeine and theanine capsules, a choline source, or an omega-3, no mechanism overlap.
- No cycling required. This is meant to be a steady, ongoing daily foundation.
What to avoid
- Taking it within 2 hours of certain antibiotics (tetracycline or quinolone-class) or bisphosphonate medications, since magnesium can interfere with their absorption.
- Assuming three forms means you need less total elemental magnesium than usual. The dose that matters is still the 300 mg total, not the number of forms it's split across.
Third Party Lab Testing
- Third-party tested, verified independently rather than taken on the brand's word alone.
- Chelamax® is a patented chelated magnesium technology. Brands license it rather than substituting a generic chelate, which comes with its own supporting documentation.
- Certified Vegan and Non-GMO, as stated on the label.
As with any supplement, the strongest form of proof is a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis tied to the lot number on your bottle. If verifying a specific batch matters to you, note the lot number and request the COA directly from the manufacturer.

Warnings (worth reading)
- Consult your doctor before use if you have kidney disease or impaired kidney function, since magnesium is cleared by the kidneys and can build up to unsafe levels if that function is reduced.
- Consult your doctor or pharmacist before use if you take antibiotics (tetracycline or quinolone-class), bisphosphonate medication, or blood pressure medication, since magnesium can interact with each of these.
- If combining with another magnesium supplement, account for your total elemental magnesium intake; this product alone is already close to the commonly cited 350 mg/day supplemental upper intake level.
- Consult your doctor before use if you are pregnant or nursing.
- Discontinue and consult a physician if you experience adverse effects.
- Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place.
