Zenos Health

Zenos Health MoodZen - Mood, Stress Response, and Focus Support with Saffron, Kanna, Citicoline, and Phosphatidylserine (90 Capsules)

The mood-and-focus formula we tested against the rest of the category ourselves, and the one that actually held up. Aggressively dosed, genuinely complex, and worth reading the safety section before you start.

  • We tested it against the rest of the category ourselves before deciding to carry it. That's the actual reason it's on this shelf. Not a clinical claim, just an honest one: of the standard mood-and-focus formulas the team has tried, this is the one that consistently stood out.
  • Saffron and kanna, both dosed at the strong end of the research. 100 mg of saffron extract and 12.5 mg of high-potency Sebrium DCD kanna are the mood core of this formula, and neither is a token amount.
  • Phosphatidylserine at a premium 600 mg. The best-studied ingredient here for supporting the body's response to daily stress, dosed at the high end of what's been used in trials.
  • A real focus layer, not just a calming formula. Clinically dosed Cognizin citicoline (250 mg) plus SaraPepp Nu (300 mg) means this is built to support attention and mental clarity too, not only mood.
  • Zero stimulants. No caffeine anywhere in this formula, which is why it pairs cleanly with our L-theanine + caffeine stack instead of competing with it.
  • We'll tell you plainly which parts are the strongest and which are the weaker links. Full honest breakdown, plus a genuinely thorough safety section, below.

We carry a lot of mood and focus formulas past our desks before we decide to stock one, and MoodZen is the one that held up best when the team actually used it against the others. That’s an honest statement about our own experience, not a scientific claim. We’re not running controlled trials here, we’re a small team that tries things and compares notes. But it’s the real reason this specific formula earned a spot on the shelf instead of a dozen other options that looked similar on paper.

What we like about it: the core is genuinely strong. Saffron and Sebrium DCD kanna are dosed at levels that match or exceed what’s used in the positive research on each, phosphatidylserine is dosed at the high end of the studied range for supporting the body’s stress response, and the focus side (Cognizin citicoline and SaraPepp Nu) uses the same doses you’d find in a well-built standalone cognitive product.

What we’ll say honestly: not every ingredient in this eleven-ingredient formula has an obvious job to do in a mood product specifically, and we’d rather tell you that upfront than pretend the whole list is equally load-bearing. The full breakdown, including which two ingredients we’re least sure about, is in Learn More below.

This is also a formula with real interaction considerations, mainly around two ingredients: kanna, which works partly as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, and nattokinase, which affects blood clotting. Neither is a reason to avoid the product if it doesn’t apply to you, but if you take an SSRI, SNRI, MAOI, blood thinner, or antiplatelet medication, this is a page worth reading in full before you start, not skimming for the price. That section is below and we’ve tried to make it genuinely useful rather than a wall of fine print.

Stack This With

MoodZen carries no caffeine of its own, which is deliberate on the formulator's part and makes it a clean layer to add to, rather than something you need to work around.

What we would not stack this with

  • Our LifeSeasons Mood Stabili-T formula. Mood Stabili-T contains 5-HTP, a direct serotonin precursor, plus its own saffron. Combined with this formula's kanna (a serotonin reuptake inhibitor) and saffron, that's multiple serotonergic mechanisms stacked at once. Pick one mood formula, not both. Full explanation on the Mood Stabili-T page.
  • Any other 5-HTP or SSRI/SNRI-class product, prescription or otherwise, without talking to your doctor first.

How to use them while stacking

  • MoodZen, 3 capsules with food, once daily. This is the anchor product in the stack, not an add-on.
  • Theanine + caffeine, same morning if you want it: no redundancy with MoodZen's ingredient list, so this is safe to layer for extra daytime energy.
  • Skip any additional citicoline on top of this, since MoodZen already contains a clinical dose.
  • Omega-3 stays on its own daily schedule regardless of whether today is a MoodZen day.

What this formula is actually trying to do

MoodZen is built as a mood-and-focus hybrid, not a pure calming product and not a pure nootropic. It leans on two ingredients for mood and stress response, a handful more for focus and cognition, and a couple of supporting-cast additions. Reading the label as one long list makes it look like a kitchen sink. Reading it in the three groups below makes the actual logic of the formula much clearer.

The mood core: saffron and kanna

Saffron extract (100 mg, standardized to a minimum of 2% of the compound the research literature calls safranal, listed on this label as safranol) is one of the more extensively studied natural mood ingredients available. Multiple controlled trials have looked at standardized saffron extract for everyday low mood, generally using doses in the 28 to 30 mg range, which makes the 100 mg here a notably strong dose relative to what's actually been studied.

Sebrium DCD kanna (Sceletium tortuosum, 12.5 mg standardized to 3% total alkaloids) is the other half of the mood core, and it's worth understanding what it actually does rather than treating it as a generic calming herb. Kanna has real, documented pharmacological activity: it acts partly as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor and partly as a PDE4 inhibitor, alongside some dopaminergic activity.

That dual mechanism is why it's associated with a relatively fast-onset mood effect compared to slower-building botanicals. On a pure alkaloid basis, 12.5 mg at 3% standardization delivers roughly 3.75 times the total alkaloid content of a standard 25 mg dose of Zembrin, the more commonly seen competing kanna extract standardized to 0.4% alkaloids. That's a genuinely potent dose, and it's also exactly why the serotonin-related warnings in this section matter.

A botanical ingredient having a real pharmacological mechanism is not a reason to avoid it, but it is a reason to take the interaction warnings seriously rather than assuming "natural" means "no interactions."

Phosphatidylserine and the stress-response angle

Phosphatidylserine (600 mg, standardized to a minimum 50%, sourced from sunflower lecithin rather than the older soy-derived versions) is dosed at the high end of the range used in research. The research on phosphatidylserine has most consistently looked at its effect on blunting the cortisol spike that follows a stressful event, which is the mechanism behind the stress-response positioning here. Phosphatidylserine can help support a calmer physiological response to daily stress; that's a statement about what the ingredient can help support, not a promise about your personal cortisol readings, which nothing sold without a prescription can make.

The focus layer

Cognizin citicoline (250 mg) is dosed at a standard clinical level, the same one used in the research showing benefits for memory and focus in healthy adults, and the same dose in our standalone citicoline capsules if you want a direct comparison. SaraPepp Nu (300 mg, Timut pepper extract) is dosed in line with the placebo-controlled research showing improved attention, working memory, and reduced mental fatigue.

Alpinia galanga root extract (200 mg) is a non-stimulant alertness ingredient, included here specifically because it supports focus without adding any stimulant load to a formula that's deliberately caffeine-free.

Lion's mane (300 mg, fruiting body extract, not the cheaper mycelium-on-grain version some competitors use) is included for its preliminary research on nerve growth factor activity and long-term cognitive support; worth knowing honestly that 300 mg sits on the lighter end of the doses used in the studies showing a signal, since several used 1,000 mg or more of dried powder. We'd call lion's mane a genuine supporting ingredient here, not the reason to buy the product.

Black pepper extract, doing its usual job

Black pepper extract (5 mg) is a standard bioavailability enhancer, included at a typical dose to help support the absorption of the other actives in the capsule. Its presence is a small, honest quality signal in a formula like this.

The two supporting ingredients

We'd rather say this plainly than let you find it out from a forum post later. Two ingredients in this formula have a thinner case for being in a mood product specifically: ivy leaf extract (Hedera helix, 300 mg) and a Japanese knotweed extract (Polygonum cuspidatum, 300 mg), included here mainly as a resveratrol source.

Ivy leaf has a long traditional history as a cough remedy, and what mood-related evidence exists is early-stage animal research, not human clinical trials.

The knotweed extract's connection to mood is a loose antioxidant and anti-inflammatory argument; resveratrol is a genuinely interesting compound, but its strongest evidence base is in longevity and cardiovascular research, not mood specifically.

Neither ingredient raises a safety flag on its own at these doses, and we're not pulling the product over it, but if you're paying close attention to what you're taking and why, these are the two lines on the label where they provide very modest, indirect support unlike the rest of the formula.

Why there's no caffeine here

This formula was built stimulant-free on purpose, which is part of what makes it layer cleanly with a caffeine source of your choosing rather than locking you into a specific stimulant dose. It also means MoodZen alone is reasonable to take later in the day if your schedule calls for it, something a caffeinated mood formula couldn't offer.

Who it tends to suit

  • Anyone who wants mood and stress-response support alongside genuine cognitive support, in one formula rather than two separate products.
  • People who've tried a lighter, more conservative mood formula and found it underwhelming; this one is dosed aggressively on its core ingredients.
  • Anyone not currently on an SSRI, SNRI, MAOI, blood thinner, or antiplatelet medication, or who has confirmed with their doctor that this formula is compatible with what they're taking.

Who it is probably not for

  • Anyone currently taking a prescription antidepressant, anti-anxiety medication, or blood thinner, without clearing it with their prescribing doctor first. See the full safety section under Ingredients.
  • Anyone who wants a single-ingredient or minimal-ingredient approach; this is a dense, multi-mechanism formula by design.
  • Anyone pregnant, nursing, or under 18.
  • Anyone with a scheduled surgery or procedure coming up who hasn't talked to their surgeon about stopping this beforehand.
How To Use

Take 3 capsules daily with food. That's the full labeled serving. Taking it with a meal is a reasonable general practice for a multi-ingredient formula like this and may help with tolerance.

Give it a real trial before judging it. Some of what's in here, particularly kanna and saffron, has a track record of a comparatively faster-onset feel. Other parts, especially phosphatidylserine's effect on the stress response, are studied as a repeated-dose effect that builds over several weeks. Judge the full formula on somewhere between two and four weeks of consistent daily use, not the first day.

Check in with yourself periodically. This is an eleven-ingredient formula with real pharmacological activity in more than one of its components. We'd suggest treating it the way you'd treat any supplement with this much going on: notice how you feel, and don't hesitate to stop and reassess if something feels off, even if nothing on the warnings list technically applies to you.

How to dose it

  • 3 capsules together is the studied full serving.
  • Some people prefer splitting it, for example 2 capsules in the morning and 1 midday. We don't have data on whether split dosing changes the effect, so treat that as a personal comfort choice rather than an optimization.

How to stack it

  • Pairs cleanly with our L-theanine + caffeine stack on the same day (see Stack This With above).
  • Don't add a separate citicoline product on top of this one. You'd be paying for and taking a redundant dose.
  • Don't combine this with any other saffron, kanna, 5-HTP, or SSRI-type product, prescription or otherwise, without talking to your doctor first.

What to avoid

  • Combining this with a prescription SSRI, SNRI, MAOI, tramadol, or St. John's Wort without your doctor's explicit sign-off. See Ingredients for the full explanation.
  • Combining this with warfarin, heparin, aspirin, clopidogrel, or regular NSAID use without your doctor's explicit sign-off.
  • Starting this within two weeks of a scheduled surgery without talking to your surgeon. Ask your surgical team for their specific timing recommendation.
  • Taking it if you're pregnant, nursing, or under 18.
Third Party Lab Testing
  • Third-party tested, verified independently rather than taken on the brand's word alone.
  • Manufactured in a GMP-certified U.S. facility (current Good Manufacturing Practices), per the label.
  • Vegetarian capsules, non-GMO, and free from artificial additives, as stated on the label.
  • Multiple branded, standardized actives (Cognizin®, SaraPepp Nu®, Sebrium DCD®, Nattokinase NSK-SD40®), each with its own documentation and standardization behind it rather than unnamed generic extract.

As with any supplement, the strongest form of proof is a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis tied to the lot number on your bottle. If verifying a specific batch matters to you, note the lot number and request the COA directly from the manufacturer.

Other Ingredients: Vegetarian capsule (hypromellose), rice flour, magnesium stearate (vegetable source).

A note on nattokinase and soy: nattokinase is enzymatically fermented from soybeans (natto). This is a different situation from the highly refined soy lecithin used in some of our other products, where the refining process removes most of the soy protein. Fermented whole-soybean ingredients like this one may retain more of the original soy protein. If you have a soy allergy, treat this ingredient with the same caution you'd apply to any soy-containing product, and check with your doctor first.

Warnings, in full (please actually read this one)

This is a dense, multi-mechanism formula, and we'd rather over-explain the interactions than under-explain them.

Serotonin-related interactions, read this if you take any prescription mood medication:

  • This formula contains two ingredients with documented serotonergic activity: Sebrium DCD kanna, which functions in part as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, and saffron, which has serotonergic activity of its own in the research literature.
  • Do not combine this product with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, tramadol, 5-HTP, or St. John's Wort. Combining serotonergic supplements with serotonergic medications carries a real risk of serotonin syndrome, a serious and potentially dangerous condition.
  • Do not combine this product with our LifeSeasons Mood Stabili-T formula, which contains both 5-HTP and saffron. Stacked with this formula's kanna and saffron, that's multiple serotonergic mechanisms at once. Pick one mood formula, not both.
  • If you are currently taking any prescription antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication, talk to your prescribing doctor before starting this product, even if it isn't listed by name above.

Bleeding and clotting considerations:

  • This formula contains nattokinase, a fibrinolytic enzyme that affects blood clotting, at a dose supplying 2,000 FU.
  • Do not combine this product with anticoagulant medications (warfarin, heparin) or antiplatelet medications (aspirin, clopidogrel) without your doctor's explicit guidance.
  • Use caution combining with regular NSAID use (ibuprofen, naproxen) for the same reason.
  • The Polygonum cuspidatum extract in this formula is a resveratrol source, and resveratrol has some research behind mild antiplatelet activity of its own. This isn't a standalone concern at this dose, but it's worth knowing it adds to, rather than offsets, the bleeding-risk consideration above.
  • If you have a scheduled surgery or medical procedure, talk to your surgeon about stopping this product beforehand. Ask your surgical team for their specific timing recommendation rather than guessing.
  • Discontinue and consult a doctor if you notice unusual bruising or bleeding.

Other ingredient-specific notes:

  • Ivy leaf (Hedera helix) has limited human clinical data at this dose. It's generally well tolerated; mild stomach upset is the most commonly reported issue if it doesn't agree with you.
  • See the soy note above regarding nattokinase.

Who should not use this product:

  • Anyone pregnant or nursing.
  • Anyone under 18.
  • Anyone taking an SSRI, SNRI, MAOI, tramadol, St. John's Wort, or 5-HTP without their doctor's explicit sign-off.
  • Anyone on anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication without their doctor's explicit sign-off.
  • Anyone with a bleeding disorder.

General:

  • Consult your doctor before use if you take any prescription medication, given the number of active ingredients in this formula.
  • Discontinue and consult a physician if you experience adverse effects.
  • Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place.
